Family Counselling

Family counselling helps you to understand and cope better with the stresses and strains of family life.
Families can be a source of support, encouragement and love but sometimes relationships within families are put under strain and family members feel isolated or overlooked.

You can see a Relate Family Counsellor individually, as a small group or the whole family together.

Every family has disagreements, often caused by the wear and tear of changes that occur over time. Usually these disagreements are short-lived and get resolved but sometimes they continue and cause stress that can affect everyone in the family.

Family counselling can help when siblings aren’t getting on, or parents and children. Whether you are going through a divorce or separation or forming a new family things can be challenging; it is at this point that many parents contact Relate for some support to help everyone settle.

Family counselling can also be for adult members of a family, like a parent and grown up child, who want to improve communication or deal with a specific issue.

Together with your family counsellor, you will decide which family members will come to the sessions and how frequently you want to come. The choice will depend on what needs to be talked about and who it affects most. We won’t take sides or tell you what to do, we will encourage each family member to have a voice and help you resolve your differences together.

We will ask you to make a payment for your counselling in advance. There is an initial registration and administration cost of £15 and then you will be charged for each appointment. Each counselling session costs us £65 to provide. We are a not-for-profit service and offer subsidised sessions if you need these. Please contact us to find out more about booking an appointment with one of our counsellors.

Testimonial

Here is a client who wrote to one of our counsellor, Sheenah, after a few months finishing her counselling

“You popped in my head on many occasions and I truly believe our meetings and your words over the past and now have helped me through, especially you being able to relate to my situation (because there’s not many who could, unless you'd been through something similar) it's helped me to know what I'd decided was the best thing for me and that is all that matters.  This is the last thing I needed to do to put an end to it all and get on with living. Hope you have a fab Christmas and the New Year brings you lots of happiness and luck. Thank you for everything. Take care.” - Georgina
